THE PAST YEAR OF CHOLLA CHAPTER
In the past year, there have been a number of positive changes and
accomplishments:
-Our membership has tripled in size
-We've reduced the number of chapter meetings but increased the length,
scope, and quality of each in order to offer something for everyone.
-We've incorporated two successful annual events which broaden our
visibility and outreach capabilities: The Mini-Conference in Kwangju
and The Drama Festival in Chonju.
-The 1st annual drama festival was held on December 3, 1994 with 4
teams from 2 universities.
-The 2nd drama festival was held on September 23, 1995 with 9 teams
from 5 universities, 1 high school and 1 middle school. This second
effort was a great improvement on the first.
-The first annual Mini-Conference was a huge success and we look forward
to repeating it again in January 1996.
- We adopted Special Interest Groups (SIG's) in the areas of:
Elementary Education Secondary Education
University Education Using Technology in Education
- We now promote local middle and high school classroom visits by
native speakers to increase member benefits.
In the next year we hope to do the following:
- Increase membership by 50-100%.
- Enlist the support of the Board of Education in Chonju.
- Enlarge and improve the annual Drama Festival and Mini-Conference.
- Draw international participation in the form of speakers from Japan
Association of Language Teachers (JALT) and Thai TESOL, and encourage
our members to likewise present nationally and internationally.
- Begin a Cholla Chapter Newsletter in order to keep our members better
informed.
- Increase member benefits such as monthly informal "dinner workshops".
(Your ideas are welcome).
- Improve the organization, motivation and development of Special
Interest Groups.
- Promote chapter contributions to the national KOTESOL journal "Language
Teaching"
- Teaching Tips
- Research Results
- Problems/Concerns/Ideas
- Encourage the contributions and participation of our Korean members
by providing more translated materials and offering a few presentations
in Korean.
- Future topics: - Adapting middle and high school textbooks
- Using classroom English "Does it work?"
- Hogwans and High Schools: The right mix?
- Should we abolish the Education Colleges?
- Effective Teacher Training
- English in Elementary School: How effective is it?
- Computers in the classroom
- A variety of shared classroom tips and activities
Note:
The next chapter election will be held in April 1996. The current
executive committee is served by:
President - Todd Terhune
Vice President - Kim Jin-woo
Secretary - J. Scott Payne
Treasurer - Claudia Hett-Payne
It is known that at least 3 of the present members will not be able
to continue. Therefore we must focus on finding appropriate replacements
before election time. |
